Logic Pro X

Recording

This DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is a Mac-only software that is powerful and designed with the songwriter in mind with thousands of loops to choose from. The transport is nicely arranged and sits neatly atop the workstation. One of the cool features of the transport is that when you play something on a MIDI keyboard. It will tell you what chord you are playing. This can be helpful if you don't have that much knowledge of music theory and you are trying to piece compositions together.

MIDI recording and editing is smooth and intuitive using Logic Pro X. Double clicking on any recorded MIDI within the arrangement window will open the MIDI editor. Within this editor you can change the velocity, humanize the notes or quantize your MIDI with a click of a button. You can also transpose all your MIDI data to a specific key if needed. Making music with MIDI data is simple.

Effects & Plugins

For guitarists, the ability to plug the guitar straight to an interface and use the software alone to achieve great guitar tones is a quality that not many studio recording programs possess. The amp within this recording software models famous styles and tones from multiple guitar amplifiers including Fender. Mesa Boogie and Marshall. The digital amplifiers have adjustable controls that work just like a real-life amplifier so you can dial in your tone to your specifications. You can also customize the type of microphone that is placed in front of the amplifier as well as the placement.

To further the fun for guitar geeks, Pro X has a full pedal board of guitar effects that is completely customizable. You can chain together an array of guitar pedals, giving you the full arsenal of professional guitar gear all within the software.

One of the most unique features within Pro X is the drummer track. This is your session drummer when you need one. You can pick the drummer and the type of drum kit for your recording session. Each drummer has its own playing qualities and styles and you can also adjust the way the drummer plays within the settings. The drummer adjusts to your playing style and simulates a real human element to the digital drum emulation.

This music studio software provides over 67 digital effects, as well as 18 virtual instruments and a large loop library. Outside of the drummer track and guitar effects, the virtual instruments sound like the real-life versions they are emulating. The virtual instruments are a gem within this powerful software.

Mixing

The layout of the mixer is nice and clean. The mixer is customizable so you can see only what you want to see. You can add up to 255 audio and MIDI tracks into the mixing console. Each track can handle up to 14 effects inserts and eight send effects. The software also has a multi-band EQ built within the mixer to tweak the sound of your recorded audio.

When we added MIDI instruments into the mixer, the mixer would automatically create additional channels with automatic busses, insert and sends. If you just want the bare sound of your MIDI instrument, you have to delete those additional channel strips from the mixer.
